Brigade History

The inaugural meeting of the Green Head Bush Fire Brigade was held on 14th of May 2003. Green Head had seen a substantial rise in bush fires around the town and surrounding areas at this time and the community were concerned that there weren't the available resources provided to the town to contain these fires.

A number of locals got together and decided to form a local brigade, which generated a huge response from the community. A huge number of the community attended the inaugural meeting at the local community centre and quickly filled pertinent positions. The inaugural committee consisted of Wilf Fitzpatrick – President, Julie Taylor – Secretary, Rowley Green – Brigade Captain, John Koot - 1st Lieutenant / Training Officer, Simon Bryant - 2nd Lieutenant, Bryan Greene 3rd Lieutenant, Nic Bryant – Equipment Officer and Grahame Grover – Communications / Weather Officer.

With an eagerness to get the BRIGADE OFF THE GROUND and with total support from the Green head community, the GHVBFB was operational. Due to the low funds available at the time the GHVBFB were delivered a ancient Fire Truck handed in by another Brigade. This served the Brigade well over the ensuing months. More funding was needed urgently to kit out our volunteer fire fighters and to establish a good base with important communication.  The GHVBFB were successful in their first attempt at applying for a grant.  A Federal Government small equipment grant of $5000 saw the brigade with a new weather station, digital camera and hand held radios.

The Brigade at this time became a fantastic central location for locals to get together, meet up, discuss the fire season and organise local charity events. ‘World Shave for a Cure’ helping those with Leukemia, became an annual event and raised thousands of dollars over the years, as did Bluey Shave Day. To rally the community and make them feel an integral part of the Brigade, a Foundation Family Fun day was organised.  This was a huge success and generated over $4000 to be utilised for the brigade. Community members paid $10 to become foundation members of the brigade and a board with all their names was placed in the fire shed in recognition of their support.

Over the ensuing years, committee members have changed, new fire fighting trucks and equipment were purchased, with a strong group of volunteer fire fighters and auxiliary members volunteering their time to keep Green head a safe town to live.
